Stephen B Whatley
British Expressionist Artist
(b.1965) London, England.

“One of the things that makes a great portrait artist is empathy - the ability to understand the subject and reveal characteristics they may not themselves have known they had. Perhaps this is why expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley’s depictions of Princes William and Harry are so powerful… “ - HELLO! magazine, October 2008.

Stephen B Whatley paints from his heart and soul with great passion - his diverse subjects including still-life, architecture, city & landscapes and iconic Christian tributes.

Stephen was born in London in 1965 and studied Fine Art at the Ipswich and Norwich Schools of Art and the University of London.

He has exhibited widely, notably at the Lloyd’s Building, The Royal National Theatre, the ICA, Olympia and the Tower of London. Since the 1980s his work has been the subject of numerous press features including TIME magazine; in 2008. In 2006, Stephen B Whatley was listed in David Buckman’s dictionary, Artists in Britain Since 1945.

Stephen’s many portrait sitters include TV presenter Sarah Greene and actors Dame Judi Dench, Julie Walters OBE, Alec McCowen CBE and Siân Phillips CBE.

His public commissions include two paintings of Buckingham Palace; reproduced on posters all over the London Underground Network, to publicise the Summer Opening of the Palace in 1999 & 2000. His painting of the exterior view hangs inside Buckingham Palace, while the interior view of The Grand Staircase is owned by the London Transport Museum.
